RED transitioned from the DSMC2 to the DSMC3 ecosystem in 2021 with the introduction of the V-RAPTOR (or 2020 with the KOMODO, depending on perspective). This shift led the American cinema camera manufacturer to gradually discontinue production and support for its first- and second-generation cameras. Many components, including displays, storage options, and accessories, are no longer available for purchase or repair.
In 2019, Jinni Tech, a UK-based company, sparked controversy by releasing teardown videos of the RED MINI-MAG, contributing to a significant drop in the price of RED’s proprietary storage solutions. While third-party storage options for RED cameras remain a complex subject, CINELUX has stepped forward with an alternative: the CINELUX NEXA-MAG.

CINELUX NEXA-MAG – Features and Performance
The CINELUX NEXA-MAG is a CNC-machined aluminum SSD drive designed specifically for RED DSMC1 and DSMC2 cameras. Available in 480GB and 960GB capacities, this high-performance drive utilizes “ultra-cool running Toshiba components” and offers durability up to 3,000TB written.
Overheating has long been a challenge with RED MINI-MAGs. CINELUX addresses this issue by integrating high-conductivity thermal pads inside the NEXA-MAG, which enhances heat dissipation, prolongs SSD lifespan, and optimizes data transfer speeds. The drive boasts speeds up to 570MB/s, making it 25% faster than a MINI-MAG while maximizing SATA III capabilities.
CINELUX has also refined the NEXA-MAG’s design with recessed areas on the top, ensuring easier handling and a more seamless installation and removal process. Additionally, its slightly larger and thicker form factor guarantees a more secure and stable fit inside the camera.

Pricing and Availability
The CINELUX NEXA-MAG is currently available for preorder, with shipments expected to begin in mid-May. The 480GB version is priced at $545, while the 960GB model retails for $795. A limited-time 30% preorder discount applies until the first 100 units sell out or until May 15th—whichever occurs first.
