DZOFilm X-tract 18-28mm T8 FF Launches While Laowa Teases a Rival

DZOFilm recently introduced the DZOFilm X-tract 18-28mm T8 FF Macro Zoom lens, a full-frame probe zoom that stands out in the cine lens market. Meanwhile, Laowa has teased a competing probe lens it claims will surpass the competition.

The DZOFilm X-tract 18-28mm T8 FF offers a 2.1:1 reproduction ratio, capturing subjects at double their real size. It boasts a 6mm working distance and a 47.3cm focusing distance, shorter than the typical 56.3cm seen in other probe lenses. The lens design significantly minimizes focus breathing, reducing it to just 0.5% at 24mm, compared to the 39.2% commonly observed in similar lenses.

Key Features and Specifications

Constructed with 25 elements in 18 groups, including 7 high-refractive-index (HRI) elements, the lens ensures accurate color temperature. It effectively reduces the yellowish tint often seen in competing probe lenses. Distortion is controlled within ±2% throughout the zoom range, with near-zero distortion and focus breathing specifically at 24mm.

Weighing 1,089g and measuring 415mm in length, the lens features an IP57 protection rating and a waterproof depth of 280mm. The DZOFilm X-tract 18-28mm T8 FF is available for preorder at $3,499 in a PL mount, with an EF mount option coming soon.

Laowa Rival

Laowa Probe Zoom

Laowa has quickly responded by announcing a probe lens it promises will outperform competitors. Slated for release in Q2 2025, Laowa’s lens will feature a wider 15mm focal length with a 2.3x zoom range, approximating a 15-34.5mm lens. It will also offer attachments for Direct, Periscope, and 35-degree Tilt View shooting angles, with up to 2x magnification and a waterproof barrel.

With both brands introducing innovative options, the DZOFilm X-tract 18-28mm T8 FF and Laowa’s upcoming lens are shaping the next evolution in probe zoom technology.
