In this review, I share my experience with the FLM CP-30 M5 II hybrid tripod. This model stands out as the best tripod I’ve used, and here’s why.
An excellent tripod must deliver stability, facilitate both eye-level and ground-level shooting, remain compact with a folded length under 50 cm, weigh less than 2 kg (including a ball head), offer ease of disassembly for cleaning, feature twist locks, protect against water intrusion in the legs, include an optional center column, and remain reasonably priced.
While the center column plays a lesser role for me, its benefits for videography or additional height can occasionally prove valuable. For most of my shots, a tripod height of 150 cm—augmented by the ball head and camera—works perfectly for eye-level photography.
Why Weight Matters
Weight holds the greatest importance, especially during hikes. My previous tripod, exceeding 2 kg, became burdensome in alpine conditions. While its thick legs provided unparalleled stability, such bulkiness often exceeded the needs of standard camera setups.
The FLM CP-30 M5 II, on the other hand, excels in portability without compromising functionality. Crafted from carbon fiber, it weighs just 1.35 kg without a ball head. Even with my 445 g ball head attached, the entire setup remains under 2 kg.
I tested this tripod extensively in diverse conditions—windy environments, river setups, and extended time-blending shoots. The FLM tripod consistently performed with precision, maintaining stability and reliability throughout.

Features and Build Quality
This hybrid tripod achieves a maximum height of 150 cm, utilizing five leg sections. Despite this, it maintains a compact folded length of just 46 cm. Its build quality exudes excellence, with smooth leg adjustments and locking mechanisms that support three angle positions, allowing setups mere centimeters above ground level.
The tripod’s 59mm mounting plate incorporates a cork layer that effectively dampens vibrations. Additionally, it includes two 1/4-inch mounting points for accessories, such as umbrella holders. The integrated bubble level further enhances its usability, particularly for panorama photography.
Rubber feet ensure strong grip and stability, while interchangeable spikes cater to softer terrains. The FLM tripod comes with a lifetime warranty, reinforcing the brand’s confidence in its durability and craftsmanship.
Room for Improvement
Despite its many strengths, the FLM tripod leaves room for minor enhancements. It lacks an integrated center column, which some videographers might find limiting. However, a screw-on center column, available for under $30, resolves this concern without sacrificing stability.
Another improvement could involve sealed locks, which protect against saltwater intrusion during coastal shoots. Although I haven’t tested such locks yet, their inclusion might elevate this already exceptional tripod.
Verdict
The FLM CP-30 M5 II redefines what a travel tripod can achieve. Its hybrid nature offers versatility, catering to both travel and studio photography. Lightweight yet sturdy, it accommodates heavy setups like telephoto lenses while maintaining portability.
Priced at $477.90, this tripod delivers excellent value through its premium construction and lifetime warranty. While cheaper options exist, few match its combination of features and quality. For me, it comes close to perfection.
