How to Quickly Remove Unwanted Objects in Lightroom
In this Lightroom tips guide, we’ll show you how the new AI-powered removal tool makes it faster and easier to select and remove unwanted objects. Here’s how it works:
Below is the original image. The lantern on the far right is partially cut off (and I don’t like the even number of lanterns), so I’ll remove it. First, click the Remove icon (or press the letter Q on your keyboard to open the panel).
STEP ONE: In the Remove panel, click the first tool (the one that looks like an eraser), then enable the ‘Use Generative AI’ checkbox (as shown here).

STEP TWO: To use this tool, paint fully over the object you want to remove (in this case, the lantern on the right). I’m painting over the inside of the lantern. The tip here saves you time by allowing Lightroom to help finish the job, rather than having to paint over the entire object yourself.

STEP THREE: The key is to turn on the “Detect Objects” checkbox (as shown above) before painting. Now, paint around the object’s edge (as I did with the large brush stroke around the lantern). Lightroom will automatically fill in the center for you, thanks to the Detect Objects feature.

STEP FOUR: Once you release the mouse button, Lightroom detects the object and fills in the rest automatically. It may not seem like much with a simple object like this lantern, but for more complex objects, this can save a lot of time.

STEP FIVE: After Lightroom finishes, click the ‘Remove’ button (as shown here). A status dialog will appear for a few seconds (as seen above) while it works its magic.

Now the lantern is gone. Lightroom helped make selecting and removing it faster and easier. Just paint loosely around the object, and it will automatically fill in the inside once “Delete Objects” is turned on.
