Peak Design Outdoor Backpacks: A Comprehensive Review

For years, Peak Design has been a leader in crafting durable, functional camera and tech-lifestyle bags, but a question lingered among outdoor enthusiasts: where are the bags designed specifically for hiking and adventure? Today, they answer that question with the launch of their new Peak Design Outdoor Backpack lineup.
This new collection includes two sizes of backpacks (25L and 45L) and two variants of outdoor slings, all available in sleek black, cloud, and eclipse color options. Let’s explore the features that set these backpacks apart.
Exterior Design: Built for the Outdoors
Both backpack sizes feature a PFAS-free TPU front shell that’s designed to withstand not only rain and moisture but also the wear and tear of rough surfaces. The front panel includes a unique locking cable system that, when adjusted, reveals a large flex pocket perfect for stowing jackets, raincoats, or other quick-access items.
The backpacks also feature a roll-up top access secured by a magnetic latch, offering quick entry into the main compartment—ideal for those moments when you need something in a hurry.
On the sides of the backpacks, you’ll find expandable mesh flex pockets. The 25L version’s pockets are tall enough to hold large water bottles or tripods, while the 45L version adds an extra shorter pocket for additional small accessories.

Comfort and Customization
The back panels and shoulder straps differ between the two sizes, with the 45L version offering a more complex, adjustable system to accommodate various body types. Both versions include removable sternum straps and mesh pockets on the shoulder straps, providing ample storage and attachment options for accessories.
The backpacks are also equipped with attachment points for waist belts, with the 45L version including these belts as standard. These belts come with additional pockets and are perfect for securing small items.
The main compartment, lined with Terra Shell 210D Ripstop Nylon, offers robust protection against moisture and dust. A multipurpose sleeve within the compartment can hold a 15-16 inch laptop or a hydration pack, depending on your needs.
The backpacks are designed to work seamlessly with Peak Design’s modular packing tools, like camera cubes and tech pouches. The 25L version can accommodate up to two full-frame camera bodies and several lenses, while the 45L version offers even more space, perfect for multi-day adventures.

Application and User Experience
The 25L backpack is ideal for day hikes or overnight trips, while the 45L version is built for longer, more challenging expeditions. Both sizes can be collapsed for easy storage, making them a versatile option for travelers.
While these backpacks offer excellent compartmentalization and quick access options, a side zipper for easy access to the main compartment would have been a welcome addition. However, the modularity of the rear panel and shoulder straps, particularly on the 45L version, makes for a customizable and comfortable carrying experience.
Peak Design’s new outdoor backpacks marry simplicity with functionality, offering a solution that minimizes the physical burden of carrying camera gear on outdoor adventures. The brand’s commitment to durability and environmental responsibility shines through in this collection, making these backpacks a worthy investment for any outdoor photographer.
