Tamron has announced the release of the Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 Canon RF, set to debut on December 12. Already available for Sony E-mount and Fujifilm X-mount cameras, this will be Tamron’s first APS-C lens for Canon’s mirrorless platform. While Canon has only granted Tamron licensing for APS-C lenses, this release is excellent news for users of smaller-sensor cameras, especially given the limited options from Canon’s own lineup.
The 11-20mm f/2.8 Di III-A RXD is a fast-aperture ultra-wide-angle zoom lens that covers a focal range of 11mm to 20mm, maintaining a constant f/2.8 aperture. Despite its high-speed optics, it remains lightweight and compact, making it a well-balanced choice for APS-C mirrorless bodies.
Features and Build
The lens construction includes 12 elements in 10 groups, featuring two Glass Molded Aspherical (GM) elements for maintaining resolution across the image, one eXtra Low Dispersion (XLD), and two Low Dispersion (LD) elements to minimize aberrations. These components ensure sharp, high-quality images throughout the frame.
Tamron uses its RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) motor for autofocus, designed to deliver smooth, fast, and quiet operation, making it ideal for both photography and video applications.

Notable Upgrades for Canon RF Users
The RF-mount version introduces a significant design upgrade: a physical switch to toggle between Manual Focus and Autofocus. In contrast, the Sony and Fujifilm versions rely on in-camera menus for this function. The lens also retains the utility connection port for firmware updates via Tamron’s Lens Utility software.
Interestingly, the Canon RF version will retail for $659, which is less expensive than its counterparts for Sony and Fujifilm, making it an attractive option for APS-C users.
Tamron’s innovative approach continues to fill gaps in the market, offering accessible, high-performance lenses for Canon’s RF system.
