ARRI cameras have consistently catered to high-end productions, with pricing reflecting their premium positioning. The widely celebrated ARRI ALEXA 35, a top performer for dynamic range and exposure latitude, is no exception. Introduced over two years ago, this camera brought the first truly new sensor (ALEV 4) in a Super 35 ARRI model in over a decade. Initially embraced by rental houses and production companies, its launch was followed by a wave of cancellations due to industry strikes and cost-cutting by major streamers.

Tackling Price Without Sacrificing Value
Given the initial success and exceptional performance of the ARRI ALEXA 35, ARRI sought innovative ways to expand its reach without undercutting prices. The solution? The ARRI ALEXA 35 Base Model—identical in hardware to the Premium version but with software features offered à la carte. This approach maintains ARRI’s commitment to preserving resale value while allowing users flexibility in choosing features they need.
Feature Licensing: Pay for What You Use
The Base Model’s core capabilities can be expanded via licenses for specific features, such as ARRIRAW recording, 120 fps shooting, open-gate anamorphic formats, pre-recording, and ARRI’s Look Library. These licenses are available on a weekly, monthly, annual, or permanent basis. For those opting for all licenses permanently, the total cost matches the Premium Model, ensuring no financial disadvantage in upgrading later.
Streamlined Licensing for Rental and Production
ARRI has simplified its licensing process, enabling production companies to purchase licenses directly rather than relying on rental houses. This update enhances convenience for short-term projects, making the Base Model a flexible option for varying production needs.

More Affordable Media Options
Addressing feedback on the high costs of Codex drives, ARRI has introduced the Codex Compact Drive Express 1TB. Priced 40% lower than the original, this new drive supports ProRes recording while excluding ARRIRAW, making it a cost-effective alternative for projects with less demanding requirements.
A Budget-Friendly ARRI Camera?
While not exactly a budget camera, the ARRI ALEXA 35 Base Model offers a more accessible pathway into the ARRI ecosystem. By reducing upfront costs and adding licensing flexibility, ARRI has opened the door for broader use while maintaining its appeal for high-end productions.
