DJI O4 Air Unit Series: Two New Camera for Custom FPV Builds

The highly anticipated DJI O4 Air Unit series has arrived, featuring two innovative camera systems that expand customization possibilities for FPV drones. Following the successful launch of the O3 generation over two years ago, DJI has adhered to its product roadmap by first integrating the new technology into the Osmo Action 4 and DJI Avata 2, before releasing it as a standalone kit for drone builders.

Two Models for Distinct Applications

For the first time, DJI offers two variations in the Air Unit series—the DJI O4 Air Unit and the DJI O4 Air Unit Pro—tailored for different use cases. The standard O4 Air Unit, weighing a mere 8.2 grams (0.29 oz), is optimized for freestyle and racing drones. Its compact design houses a 1/2-inch CMOS sensor capable of recording 4K video at 60fps. The unit features a single-antenna system, enabling 1080p 100fps H.265 live streaming with a latency of just 20ms and a range of up to 10km. With 23GB of internal storage but no memory card slot, this model prioritizes minimalism over expandability.

The Pro version, meanwhile, targets filmmakers seeking superior image quality for cinematic FPV drone projects. It utilizes a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor and delivers 4K video recording at up to 120fps. The system supports 10-bit color depth in D-Log M for enhanced post-production flexibility and boasts a dual-antenna design that reduces latency to as low as 15ms over a maximum range of 15km. Like its counterpart, the Pro version streams 1080p 100fps video but with a bitrate of up to 60Mbps. Additionally, it includes gyro data for stabilization via Gyroflow software and offers 4GB of internal storage alongside a microSD slot compatible with SDXC cards up to 512GB.

Shared Features and Enhancements

Both models incorporate DJI’s proprietary O4 video transmission system, ensuring reliable, low-latency connections. While the standard version is primarily intended for high-speed maneuvers and agility-focused drones, the Pro version aligns with cinewhoop and professional filmmaking applications. The Pro’s camera module mirrors the design of the Avata 2, making it compatible with existing ND filters. Furthermore, both units integrate seamlessly with DJI Goggles 2, Goggles Integra, Goggles 3, and FPV Remote Controllers 2 and 3.

Availability and Pricing

The DJI O4 Air Unit series is now available for purchase. The standard O4 Air Unit, including a camera module, transmission module, antenna, and 3-in-1 cable, retails for $109 (€120 with VAT). The Pro version, which includes a similar set of components but features an additional antenna, is priced at $229 (€250 with VAT). Individual components are also available for those seeking modular upgrades.

DJI’s latest Air Unit series underscores its commitment to innovation in the FPV drone space. Whether you’re a freestyle pilot or a cinematic creator, these new systems provide versatile options to elevate your drone builds.
