Nikon ZR Video Recording and RED Color Science

The standout feature of the Nikon ZR is internal R3D NE recording, Nikon’s edition of RED’s compressed raw codec. It integrates RED color science, offering four creative video modes and nine custom presets. Supported formats include R3D, N RAW, Apple ProRes RAW HQ, ProRes 422 HQ, H.265, and H.264. Resolutions reach 6K at 60fps and 4K at 120fps, with multiple gamma curves like Log3G10, N Log, SDR, and HLG. Media options include CFexpress Type B and microSD slots. The camera also provides focus breathing compensation and the ability to load up to ten 3D LUTs on its 4 inch vari angle monitor.

The Nikon ZR introduces internal 32 bit float audio recording, a first for full frame cinema cameras. Three internal mics with five pickup patterns capture clear sound with a 72dB signal to noise ratio. An optional ME D10 shotgun mic connects via the hot shoe without cables. The compact, weather sealed body measures 134 × 80.5 × 49mm and weighs 630g with battery and card. It lacks an EVF but offers a bright 4 inch vari angle touchscreen covering DCI P3. Connectivity includes USB C, microHDMI, stereo I/O, and an accessory terminal. The Nikon ZR ships October 2025 for $2,196.95 body only, or €2.949 with a 24 70mm f/4 S lens kit.
