When you explore photography gear, sometimes a product just stands out, and this one is truly a game-changer! E&I Creation Co. recently revealed their SG-image 50mm f/1.8 Funtom, an innovative lens featuring what they’re calling the world’s first “variable-shape aperture.” If you’re someone who loves getting creative with bokeh, this lens might have you looking twice! Imagine transforming your bokeh into fun shapes like snowflakes, stars, ovals, or even hearts. It’s a unique take that gives you more expressive options than ever.
The concept behind a “variable-shape aperture” means you could switch between these shapes smoothly while shooting. The details on exactly how it works are still under wraps, but it’s intriguing to think about the endless creative potential here. Sure, a lens with this kind of feature may not be for everyone, but for those who enjoy playful, experimental effects, this could open up a whole new world of photographic artistry. And while DIY bokeh shapes can be made at home with a fast prime lens and some paper, having it built into the lens adds a fresh level of convenience and versatility.
The 50mm f/1.8 Funtom will be compatible with a variety of mounts, including Nikon Z, Sony E, Canon RF/EF-M, Fujifilm X, Micro Four Thirds, and L-mount.

But Wait, There’s More!
Alongside the Funtom, E&I Creation Co. introduced a few other lenses to their lineup. The SG-image AF 55mm f/1.8, a classic option, features autofocus and is available in mounts for Sony E, Nikon Z, and Fujifilm X. If you’re after something ultra-compact, they’re also offering the SG-image 18mm f/6.3 Body Cap Lens—a pocket-sized option that could be perfect for everyday snapshots. It’s light, slim, and designed with a built-in lens cap, giving you a hassle-free experience that keeps your camera ready for those spur-of-the-moment shots.

SonyAlphaRumors shared a few more specs on the 55mm f/1.8, and it sounds promising: a 9-bladed aperture, 10 elements in 8 groups, a stepping motor, and a minimum focus distance of 0.6m. With an aperture range of f/1.8 to f/16 and a weight of only 365g, it’s both versatile and portable. Currently, it’s priced at around $125 or €116—a steal if you’re looking for quality on a budget.
