Sony a1 II Firmware 4.0 Brings AF+, Film Looks FL2 & FL3

Sony a1 II Firmware 4.0 Overview

Sony has released firmware version 4.0 for the Sony a1 II and a9 III, bringing notable upgrades for autofocus accuracy, creative profiles, and workflow efficiency. The update focuses on subject detection performance, preset focus compatibility, and network refinements for professional on-set use.

Key Improvements for the Sony a1 II

The Sony a1 II firmware update introduces Real-time Recognition AF+, improving subject detection and tracking across stills and video. The update also adds preset focus support for more non-power-zoom lenses and introduces two new Creative Looks FL2 (Film 2) and FL3 (Film 3) that deliver cinematic tones straight out of the camera.

Additional refinements include better exposure control with bounce flash, enhanced battery level indication, and integration of Sony’s Authenticity Camera Solution, which embeds an electronic signature into video files for verified media provenance. (Note: this feature requires a paid license and is region-dependent.)

After updating, previously stored preset focus or zoom positions must be re-registered.

Sony a9 III Additions

While the Sony a1 II firmware enhances autofocus and creative looks, the a9 III also benefits from workflow tweaks. The camera now allows Auto subject recognition (people or animals), supports adaptive info layouts for portrait or landscape orientation, and extends preset focus options to additional lenses.

Users can customize drive and focus mode switching through dials or menus, and playback now includes folder and file name visibility. FTP and remote workflows gain improvements such as faster asset transfers, enhanced tagging, and monitor & control integration with a new focus map and iris bar. Legacy Wi-Fi protocols WPA/WEP are deprecated in favor of WPA2/WPA3 for stronger security.

Video and Authenticity Workflow Enhancements

Both the a1 II and a9 III can now write an electronic signature into video files, part of Sony’s Authenticity Camera Solution for verified content chains. This is especially useful for editorial and news organizations that require metadata integrity and image verification.

Sony advises users to re-register preset focus and zoom settings after installing the update, as they aren’t compatible with previous firmware. The update also removes older Wi-Fi encryption standards (WPA/WEP) on the a9 III. As expected, both cameras receive operational stability improvements.
